PURPOSE
This Education Assistant is an AmeriCorps position that will assist with increasing girls’ interest in STEAM, increasing girls’ confidence in their STEAM-related abilities, educating girls about STEAM careers, and exposing girls to STEAM professionals. The position will contribute toward the conservation, management, research, and interpretation of the fossil, cultural and natural resources which define the purpose of Dinosaur National Monument.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The SIP member will assist in developing educational materials for two 2-day Girl Scout STEAM Camps, and one 3-day Girl Scout STEAM Camp, occurring in the summer of 2025. Primary areas of emphasis for this position are the development and execution of STEM educational content for youth, including but not limited to topics such as: Mesozoic paleontology, Fremont archaeology, local botany, local geology, local hydrology, and regional ecology and biology. As part of this process, the SIP will improve educational understanding for youth on: 1) how natural, cultural, and paleontological resources are preserved and what we can learn from them; 2) how these resources are pertinent to our everyday lives and to issues in the news today, like climate change; and 3) how to be advocates and youth stewards of park resources so that these resources can be enjoyed and protected for the future.
The SIP will have the ability to help develop course content, work on science communication skills, & will support research taking place by DINO staff & research associates, with the help of Girl Scout Camp participants. One of the main STEAM Camps’ impact goals is to increase the participants’ interest in STEAM, increasing their confidence in their STEAM-related abilities, educating girls about STEAM careers, & exposing girls to STEAM professionals, while utilizing the resources of DINO in an outdoor classroom setting.

DELIVERABLES
Deliverables include the development of educational materials and activities for STEM camps. Educational content will be developed in conjunction with supervisors to cover specific topics and locations, but a degree of independence and latitude is allowed, based on members past educational experiences. Preparation of abstracts and presentations for professional meetings will be encouraged for participants planning to attend with the park’s involvement and permission.
QUALIFICATIONS
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should be advanced undergraduate or graduate students whose educational background and career objectives are in science communication and education and should be comfortable and confident in speaking with and teaching youth. Applicants must have completed basic undergraduate course work toward a degree in geology, archaeology, or biology/ecology, or with an academic background emphasizing science communication, have strong leadership and team building skills, and the ability to work with a diverse workforce. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate ambition to pursue education and science communication as a career. Previous experience in youth education is desirable. The participant should be able to work well independently and lift at least 25 pounds and hike 1 mile in hot, desert environments.

POSITION SETTING
Natural Environment: Dinosaur National Monument straddles northwest Colorado & northeast Utah. The area is high desert, 5000 feet in elevation, with summer high temperatures of 100F, lows of 50F, and 10% humidity. Housing/work area is located in Jensen, Utah. The nearest city is Vernal, Utah which is 25 miles west of the park.
Physical Position Environment: Much of the work will be conducted in an office or field setting. Green River Resource Center office is located in an air-conditioned facility. Some workspaces are not air conditioned and may require working outside or shaded areas for prolonged periods of time.
VEHICLE AND DRIVER’S LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
HOUSING
Park housing is available and will be provided at no cost to the participant. Park provided housing is in a 3-bedroom HVAC house furnished as a dormitory (with 2-5 roommates) incl. all amenities (stove, utensils, pots, pans, fridge, washer and dryer, bathroom with shower, etc.). Depending on park staffing rooms may need to be shared (2 persons/room, no mixed sexes). Housing is in the Green River District (Jensen, Utah) so member will be in the community of permanent and seasonal staff. House is located 50 yards from work office.

EVALUATION AND REPORTING
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Dinosaur National Monument will host a Education Assistant.
