PURPOSE
This GIS Assistant is an AmeriCorps position that will help the IMR realize plans for enterprise data management and sharing of the data via web applications for park operations. We have the plan and tools in place and just need additional staff-power to make it happen. Getting the natural resource data in shape and mobilized for parks will empower not only park units, but the regional office to better leverage data for planning, park management and national data calls such as enacted via the Geospatial Data Act and MapLand Act. Similarly, work on cultural resource data will allow park planners and operators to make better plans that comply with existing laws and procedures. In terms of effective use of GIS, nothing is more important than sound data and (critically) sound data management. This will put the right data, at the right time in the hands of park staff to help inform operations and planning.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
GIS Tech. The positions will be embedded with the regional GIS team and work specifically on data management for enterprise natural and cultural resource data for the 87 park units of the IMR. Work will entail following established procedures for data management via use of ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Portal. Work will include application of data standards including naming and attribute conventions. The member will be fully engaged with other NPS GIS staff and work to prepare park data for the Park Atlas – a standard set of web mapping applications designed for park operations and that display natural and cultural resource data in context with other map data for parks. The regional GIS program is in great need of this work to make natural and cultural resource data available to parks in a map-ready, online, environment. The members will learn how parks use the data and Park Atlas and assist smaller park units with effective use of Park Atlas. In addition to the core data management, members will assist parks in using regional data for field data collection with Field Maps and Park Atlas -- learning about and setting up applications that use enterprise data for field data collection. If additional funding for travel is identified, the members will go to a park unit to assist with field data collection.
KEYWORDS: GIS, data management, ArcGIS Online and Portal, Park Atlas, web mapping
DELIVERABLES
Natural and cultural resource data for parks of the IMR will have standards applied and be presented in Park Atlas for park use. Members will set up Park Atlas webmaps for parks and assist parks in creating maps and conducting basic strategic planning for park operations such as field data collection, park events and natural and cultural resource assessments—all of which will benefit from sound data available in interactive webmaps (Park Atlas).
