PURPOSE

This Science Communication Assistant is an AmeriCorps position that will assist the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program with conducting long-term ecological monitoring within National Park sites; collaborating with a variety of partners; and providing valuable data to park managers and the public. The work that the member will complete during their 52-week position will directly contribute to the NPS mission and goals to educate the public, share knowledge about the natural resources that they manage, and communicate science-based information to the many audiences they share.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network (NCBN) is one of 32 networks created by the National Park Service to implement ecological monitoring activities under the NPS Inventory and Monitoring program (I&M). The NCBN consists of eight parks linked by geography and shared natural resource characteristics, and extend from MA to VA. These eight parks together contain approximately 59,220 hectares (146,300 acres) of park lands, representing some of the most ecologically similar collections of lands within the National Park Service. These parks protect vital coastal wetlands that are essential to water quality, fisheries, and the biological diversity of coastal, near shore, and terrestrial environments.

We are seeking a highly motivated member to become part of our team, as both a science communication and Biology assistant, helping to support both our communication and science needs. With a strong emphasis on content development, topic research, and translation of complex science for specific audiences, the successful candidate will assist in communications planning for the NCBN and assist in the development of science communication content along with our staff. The applicant will also assist with organizing science meetings, workshops and assisting with scientific reviews of some of our monitoring protocols and helping with the organization and facilitation of meetings. As an member you will have the opportunity to develop novel content and skills – such as Storytelling, webpage design, videos, podcast episodes, social media posts, blog posts, and other outreach materials – to communicate information about long-term monitoring and the value and benefit of our coastal ecology and systems. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work alongside our team collecting field data, and traveling to the parks to collect seagrass, water quality data, salt marsh data and other ecological monitoring data. This will also include assisting with data entry, and data management tasks.

Office space will be shared with staff from the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network. Kingston Rhode Island is close to summer resorts and beaches and approximately 50 minutes from Providence, RI and 35 minutes from Newport, RI. • Applicant must have a valid driver's license to drive a government vehicle.
  • A personal vehicle is REQUIRED for this position.

HOUSING

Park housing is NOT available. The member will be responsible for finding housing in the nearby area.
