PURPOSE

This Interpretive Assistant is an AmeriCorps position that will be tied to park goals of facilitating enjoyment and promoting stewardship. Programs the member develops will be evaluated for their success at promoting/providing opportunities for visitors to connect with and become stewards of the park. The typical interpretive member contact thousands of visitors over the course of their 20-week position.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The participant(s) will prepare and facilitate educational/interpretive programs to/with park visitors. These programs may include guided walks, short talks, Junior Ranger, 'Pop-Up', and Evening Programs. Participants will develop and present/facilitate a minimum of two different educational/interpretive programs (presented multiple times) describing the compelling resources and processes at work on Mount Rainier: volcanism, glaciology, stream aggradation, geo-hazards, lahars, forest or subalpine ecology, climate change, and/or cultural resources. Programs will facilitate visitor engagement with these concepts. Positions also include at least 50% of time providing informal interpretation at visitor centers and during outdoor roving. Participants will average 40 work hours per week.

The participant will learn:

1. How to plan and prepare ACE (Audience Centered Experience) interpretive programs according to National Park Service Interpretive Development Program (IDP) guidelines.

2. How to facilitate ACE/IDP programs.

3. How to help connect visitors to the park resources using informal and formal interpretive techniques.

4. How to be a successful work team member.

The member will be mentored/trained to plan and facilitate programs and informal experiences that provide opportunities for visitors to connect to park resources. The programs will also be evaluated for their ability to promote stewardship. The project is tied to park goals of facilitating enjoyment and promoting stewardship. DELIVERABLES

The participant(s) will prepare and present educational/interpretive programs to/with park visitors. These resource-based programs may include guided walks, short talks, Junior Ranger, Pop-Up, and Evening Program presentations. Participants will develop and present/facilitate a minimum of two educational/interpretive programs (multiple times each) describing the compelling geologic, cultural, and/or ecological features and processes at work on Mount Rainier: volcanism, glaciology, stream aggradation, geo-hazards, lahars, ecology, climate change, archeology/history etc. Programs will facilitate visitor engagement with these concepts. Training will help members to develop these programs according to NPS Interpretive Development - ACE (Audience Centered Experience) guidelines. Program outlines will be submitted as work products.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the NPS site location.
  • The applicant must be available to participate for 20 Weeks in order to be considered and participate.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and/or coursework and degree in interpretation or education is useful but not required. Coursework/degree in physical, ecological, environmental, or other natural science is useful/recommended. Coursework or degree in history, archeology, or cultural studies is useful/recommended. Public speaking and customer service experience is helpful but not required. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident (“green-card holder”). Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.

ADDITIONAL POSITION AND COMMUNITY INFORMATION

POSITION SETTING

Physical Position Environment: After initial training, time will be split between preparing and presenting formal interpretive programs, visitor center (information desk) roving (informal interpretation), and coaching/mentoring sessions with experienced interpretive mentor(s). Participants will be part of a staff of approximately 15-20 summer employees, and will work alongside other members, experienced NPS interpreters, and volunteers. Work is performed both indoors and outside in all types of weather from snow, wind & rain to sun and heat. Work involves standing for long periods of time, walking over rough and uneven terrain, and living in close quarters with co-workers. Emphasis is on verbal communication with diverse park visitors. Visitor service locations include a museum and a visitor center. Tahoma Woods is 15 miles west of the park, between the small communities of Ashford and Elbe, and the site of the park's administrative headquarters. Ashford and Elbe have basic services including restaurants, overnight cabins, general stores, gas, and limited cell phone coverage. More complete services, including grocery stores, doctors, and dentists, begin in Eatonville, 20 miles further west. Amenities are also located in Enumclaw, located 53 miles from Sunrise and in Packwood, 12 miles from Ohanapecosh.

Natural Environment: Mount Rainier stands 14,410 feet and holds over one cubic mile of glacial ice and snow. A diversity of ecological life zones from inland temperate rainforests to alpine tundra exist on its slopes. Over 200 miles of hiking trails circle the mountain and provide outstanding day hiking and backpacking opportunities. Subalpine meadows burst into color with summer wildflowers while the cool old growth forests offer a shady respite from summer's heat. The participants will be based either at Paradise, the most popular visitor area located in the south-central portion of the park at 5,400 feet in elevation, at Longmire in the southwestern portion of the park at 2700 feet elevation, at Sunrise in the northeastern park area (5400’), or at Tahoma Woods just west of the main park area and just below 2000 feet in elevation. The Paradise and Sunrise areas include subalpine meadows and sweeping vistas. Longmire is located in the old growth forests of Douglas fir, western red cedar and western hemlock.


VEHICLE AND DRIVER’S LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicant must have a valid driver's license to drive a government vehicle.
  • A personal vehicle is recommended for this position.

HOUSING

Park housing is available and will be provided at no cost to the participant. Park housing is available and will be provided at no cost to the participant. This includes a private or semi-private room with shared kitchen, bath, and laundry facilities. Housing may be located either within the park at Longmire, Paradise, or Sunrise areas, or nine miles outside the main park area at Tahoma Woods. Basic furnishings provided. Housing may be a shared one or two-bedroom apartment or a 2–3-bedroom house. In some cases, member may share a bedroom with another member or seasonal employee. Both apartments and houses are furnished, but the participant will need to bring bedding, kitchen supplies, towels, and other household items. Previous members (now seasonal or permanent staff) will be put in contact with the selected candidate to help mentor them regarding living in park housing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

TIME REQUIREMENTS

  • This position is expected to serve full time each week, but exact service schedules may vary.
  • Lunch breaks will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service hours.
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

ORIENTATION AND TRAINING

  • Orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • Pertinent training from the NPS site location throughout the term of service.
  • Access to free professional development webinars led by Conservation Legacy staff or the Ecological Society of America.
  • Opportunity to join one (or more) SIP Affinity Groups. Groups include: DEIJ Change Makers, Women+ in Science, BIPOC, or Pride in STEM.
  • Opportunity to present the outcomes from the SIP position at national scientific meetings held by the Ecological Society of America and Geological Society of America.

EVALUATION AND REPORTING

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.


Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.


Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources.
